“Whether we know it or not, we are almost constantly putting our bodies through micro-traumas,” Dr. Deddeh Reed of Divine Chiropractic tells me.
It’s true. Chances are, you’re probably reading this on your computer. Furthermore, you’re probably on your computer every single day. And if you’re like me, you sit at a desk, shoulders hunched over, head down, typing away. This is not the posture your body is supposed to take. Yet, this is the posture most Americans put themselves through everyday without second guessing themselves.
When we think of receiving chiropractic treatment, we probably think it’s only necessary for professional athletes who constantly push their bodies to the limit or for victims of an accident who can barely operate. This is a misconception. Everyday people need chiropractic adjustments. They just don’t think they do.
“People are living like this and don’t think there’s anything wrong with it,” Dr. Reed says. She’s talking about bodies affected by micro-traumas. For all of us at a computer all day, we don’t even realize it, but little by little we are training our bodies to round the shoulders and loosen the muscles meant to keep us upright. “This is all in the thoracic spine, the upper and middle back. It’s my most common adjustment. Right away, people get it adjusted and say they can breathe better, say that they feel taller.”
Our bodies adjust to traumas and bad habits. Pain becomes a new normal. We live with imbalances and unnecessary tensions without even knowing it.
People are living like this and don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.
“Every bone in the body can be adjusted and that can help all kinds of ailments,” Dr. Reed explains as she points to a chart in her office, much like this one on her website. “For example, a neck’s improper curve can make the hands feel numb, so adjustment relieves that sensation. Chiropractic adjustment can even help digestion problems.”
Chiropractic treatment allows the body to go back to the way it was meant to be and, like a lightbulb turning on in a dark room, patients realize the relief they’ve been missing. This sense of enlightenment, the way patients realize how their bodies were meant to feel, is what Dr. Reed works for.
Dr. Reed’s first exposure to chiropractic happened after she was in an accident and needed treatment. At the time, she was waiting to hear back from her medical school applications, but quickly became fascinated by chiropractic and the way the treatment changed her life. During one session, her chiropractor suggested that she just pursue becoming a chiropractor herself. At first, she chuckled at the thought, but the idea kept echoing in her mind. That was long ago. Now, Dr. Deddeh Reed has run Divine Chiropractic for over 8 years and is more than excited as Divine Chiropractic approaches its tenth anniversary. As a Lykens tenant in Olde Towne East the whole time, Dr. Reed has watched the area transform and continue to grow. Like Olde Towne East, Dr. Reed is ready to watch Divine Chiropractic continue to mature into something that can transform more and more lives.
