It’s easy to jump the gun and rent just any apartment. Don’t.
Not all rentals are created equally. Some are located in great places. Some look incredible. Some have great property managers.
I can be easy to assume that each apartment and rental is comparable. They are not. Renting the wrong apartment means that you’ve placed yourself in a year-long commitment that might be the wrong fit.
How do you figure out if an apartment is for you? At Lykens Companies, we consider ourselves the experts at answering a question like this. Take it from us (a property manager and developer in Columbus’s Short North with 20 years of experience).

1. Can I take a tour?
Photos like the ones on our website might be enough to convince you to rent one of our Short North apartments and rentals without ever stepping foot inside of it, but we still recommend taking a tour of any apartment you are seriously considering signing a lease for.
Some property managers either give lackluster tours of apartments, knowing very little helpful information, or they just don’t offer satisfactory tours at all, opting instead to show you the sample apartment at the leasing office.
At Lykens Companies, our fantastic leasing team wants to find the best apartment for you. We don’t believe in cookie-cutters. If you find an apartment that you’d like to tour on our Available Rentals page, you can schedule a tour with us and we’ll meet you there!
2. How are utilities handled?
It’s not flashy or fun, but figuring out how utilities work at your new apartment is a necessary evil. Are you responsible for water, gas, or electricity? Who provides the utilities? Do you pay through a tenant portal or do you pay directly to the utility company?
Different apartments have different policies. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming. The worst thing you could do is wait until you’re stuck paying for a utility you didn’t expect. Actually, scratch that–the worst thing you can do is wait until your utilities are shut off to figure this out.
Lykens Companies knows our Short North apartments inside and out (yes, even the boring stuff). Be sure to get ahead of the curve and ask our leasing team how your apartments utilities will work. We’re happy to clear up anything and make the process easy.
3. How does parking work?
Imagine getting stuck with an apartment only to realize that you never asked about how parking works. It would be pretty frustrating, right?
If you want to live in the Short North, this question is a must-ask. Parking in the Short North just got a whole lot more complicated, but the Short North experts at Lykens Companies are here to walk you through the entire process.
Some of our buildings, like the famous Wonder Bread Lofts and the brand-new Fourth Crossing complex, have private parking lots right on site. Ask one of our fabulous leasing agents how we make the headache of Short North parking disappear.
4. Do you have any other apartments to recommend?
Finally, a fun question! Apartment shopping can be like eating at a fancy restaurant, especially when you have a menu like ours! At Lykens Companies, we boast a portfolio of some of Columbus’s most beautiful and unique apartments and rentals inside Columbus’s most popular and lively neighborhood: the Short North.
At a great restaurant, you might ask the chef if he or she has any other recommendations. Usually that means that an incredible plate is heading your way. As you tour Lykens Companies apartments with one of our passionate and sophisticated leasing agents, ask if they have any recommendations that could fit your desires.
Trust us, they will. And they’ll know what’s about to come to market. A simple question like this might lead you to your dream apartment, so ask away.
