Make the most out of moving season.
It’s summer, which means that it’s peak season at Lykens Companies. For you, that means it might be time to move.
We know. Moving can be a real summer bummer.
We’ve got plenty of new tenants moving into new Lykens Companies homes. We’re thrilled to have them join the family. Of course, we’ve got tenants heading to other cities and opportunities, too, and we hate to see them go.
So whether you’re moving in or out of one of our awesome Short North apartments and rentals, be sure to check out these six common moving mistakes. Do a good job avoiding them and you might even enjoy your moving day.

Mistake #1: Underestimating Time
It’s a fact: everyone thinks they’re the exception. “It’ll be quick,” your well-meaning buddy tells you. “I don’t have that much stuff, so an hour or two tops.“
It just isn’t the case. For better or worse, we all have more stuff that we realize. Just admit it. Moving from one house to another is going to take up a whole day.
Don’t underestimate the time is takes to move. Friends will come in with the proper expectation and won’t feel cheated when they’re carrying your couch at 8:30 on a Saturday night.

Mistake #2: Not Packing In Advance
Have you ever helped a friend move? There’s nothing worse than getting there only to find that nothing is packed. Silverware is still in the drawer. Cosmetics are still on the sink. The bookshelf is still crammed.
Do your friends (and yourself) a favor. Stop procrastinating packing your things before a move. A month ahead of time, grab plenty of boxes and start labeling them. Each day, pack away something until it eventually feels like you’re living in a storage unit. It won’t be pretty, but it will make your move faster and easier when the day comes.
Mistake #3: Forgetting About Costs…
It’s up to you to budget out realistic expenses for your moving day. This means considering everything from pizza and beer for your friends to helped you, to the cost of filling gas up on your U-Haul before turning it back in.
We’ve heard of too many people not planning to spend money on a move. It never ends well.
Mistake #4: …And Forgetting About Utilities
Remember to follow your lease’s move-out instructions. Often, you’ll be the one calling your utility provider to take utilities out of your name on your move-out day.
Also, remember to contact your cable company months beforehand. Remember that it’s summer. Everyone is moving. Good luck getting Wi-Fi in your new place with a last minute phone call. You’ll just end up on a waitlist. Instead, call ahead by a month and plan everything out.
Confused about what to do with your utilities when you move out? Just contact a leasing agent for help.
Mistake #5: Not Taking Measurements
The sectional fit in your old apartment, so it will be fine, right? There’s nothing worse than hauling a couch upstairs only to find out that it won’t fit. Save yourself the headache and measure your biggest items ahead of time. If they won’t fit, arrange a way to sell (or donate) them and get a piece of furniture that will work.
Oh, and don’t forget about measuring your transportation, too. Sure, most things can fit in a U-Haul, but not everything can fit on the back of your aunt’s truck. Figure out what’s going to work before 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon in the baking sun.
Mistake #6: Not Cleaning
Ah, you’ve finally moved everything into your new apartment. Time to start setting up your end tables just the way you like them, right? Nope. Not yet. Unless you want to pay fines against your old security deposit, your job isn’t done until your old apartment is spotless.
So many people just don’t think about this and then do a bad job. Instead, get friends and family who aren’t as strong to clean up your old apartment as other move out boxes and furniture.
