Walkability has become the gold standard for apartment life in Columbus, and it’s not hard to see why. As commute times continue to rise and traffic becomes more congested, people are interested in spending less time in their cars, and more time exercising, participating in hobbies, and being with friends and family.
Our newest apartments on North Fourth street make it possible to simply walk across the street and share an ice cold beer and a laugh with friends. That’s why we’re so excited to announce our partnership with Cameron Mitchell Restaurants to make Budd Dairy Food Hall a reality — a new community hub coming in early 2020, featuring nine delicious kitchens, three eclectic bars, a rooftop patio with stunning city views, and a second-floor game room and lounge.
Situated next door to two of our newest apartment communities, Budd Dairy Food Hall is about to give the term “walkability” a whole new meaning.
A Brief History of the Budd Dairy Building
Here at Lykens Companies, we believe in restoring gems of the past. If you’ve lived in Columbus for quite some time, you’ve probably passed the Budd Dairy building. The stately brick monolith stands across the street from Seventh Sons Brewing Company and hasn’t been occupied since the late 1960’s. But the building itself comes with a fascinating history — one that spans all the way back to Columbus’ roots.
Simon T. Budd started a direct delivery milk service from his family farm in Mifflinville, Ohio, and sold 10 quarts of milk per day for 60 cents. In 1914, the Budd Dairy Company had the only sanitary refrigerated milk wagon in the United States, and in 1916, the Budd Dairy building and plant opened in the Italian Village on Fourth Street, in the building we see today between Fourth Ave and Detroit.
This building wasn’t just used for business and manufacturing, however. On the second floor, Budd Dairy Company announced the opening of “Budd’s Assembly Hall”, which was popular for clubs, luncheons, and private parties. This was where some of the first “Radio dance” events took place in Columbus.
Still, gallons upon gallons of milk came through the site on a daily basis, and milk production increased to 900 gallons per day with 20 delivery wagons. The last delivery was made in 1967, and we’re happy to re-open Budd Dairy’s doors for a noble goal: to bring the community together for delicious food, fabulous drinks, and a festive environment… that’s right next door to our Fourth Street apartments!
Budd Dairy Chefs: Bringing Flavors to the Food Hall
Lykens Companies is thrilled to partner with Cameron Mitchell Restaurants to bring Budd Dairy Food Hall delicious food and excellent service. Featuring no fewer than nine kitchens, Budd Dairy Food Hall will feature eight of Columbus’ top chefs, including one ever-changing pop-up restaurant. What’s more, Budd Dairy Food Hall will include 3 bars, so you can sip on whatever your heart delights.
The main floor of Budd Dairy Food Hall will be where all the goods are: the food! Here are some of the restaurants that will have a home here (and why Budd Dairy Food Hall is about your become your next favorite place to eat!)
Modern Southern Table by Chef Sadaya “Daisy” Lewis
Chef Daisy Lewis might be from Zanesville, but her comforting southern entrees are from the real thing. She learned how to cook from gathering around the table with her family while growing up, and she loves bringing the tastiest southern fare to Columbus. You’ll have to try out her Alabama Fried Chicken, Mississippi Fried Catfish, Gullah Crab Rice and Garlic Shrimp, Guchee Red Rice and Fush (Fish), and delicious sides, such as Carolina Coleslaw, Candied Yams, collard greens, and mac n cheese. It’s so good that Modern Southern Table won the Food Network’s “Food Court Wars” in 2014, and now she’s here in Columbus, gracing us with authentic southern flavor.
Alphabetical Comfort Kitchen by Chef Jordan Lamatrice
Chef Jordan Lamatrice grew up in a house of Italian cooks, and now he takes pride in elevating those standard recipes with bold, vibrant flavors. If you’ve been jonesing a classic sandwich and side of soup with an extra kick, Alphabetical Comfort Kitchen is where you need to be. Chef Jordan highly suggests the “Braised and Confused” Sandwich, a combination of savory braised beef topped with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and a sweet, tangy jimaca slaw.
Darista by Chef Dara Schartz
Dara travels the world and brings back big flavor. In fact, her travels to Portugal, Spain, and Thailand is what inspired Darista. Her flagship hummus plates are the base of the meal, inspired by the Mediterranian cuisine, but its how she adds bold world flavor with roasted veggies and protein offerings that makes her food unforgettable. We love how Dara sources from local farms to bring you the freshest ingredients for every dish.
Borgata Pizza by Chef Ed Bisconti
Is there anything on this earth better than New York style Pizza? We don’t think so, which is why we’re super excited about Borgata Pizza joining us at Budd Dairy. Sourced from local and regional ingredients, Chef Bisconti’s homemade pasta, pizza, and desserts are unforgettable, and will have you craving more.
What’s not to love? There’s pizza, delicious southern fare, world cuisine, and no fewer than three bars! We believe that Budd Dairy Food Hall is the perfect answer to increased walkability in Italian Village.
